Today, life on the internet for a business owner is extremely competitive. There are new businesses setting up internet sites every day, hundreds and thousands of them – some entering your industry with the main goal of taking over you current rankings or dominating page 1 of the main search engines.
In order to compete with this fierce new competition your business needs to have its own SEO strategy that is aimed at maintaining and escalating your page rankings – and to do that successfully you need a comprehensive link building strategy.
Search engine optimisation now is much more than just simple on-page optimisation. Most webmaster will already have optimised their sites for keywords they are targeting. If your on-page SEO is yet to be completed then of course on page SEO should be done to the best you can achieve prior to initiating any advanced SEO strategies. This however is not always possible – many older websites have poor on-page SEO – they may be using dynamically created pages or they have a poor URL structure. Does this hinder the Search engines? Well yes it can and where possible you should always try and optimise your pages the best you can. However, websites with poor on-page SEO can still rank highly If they have a good link building strategy in place.
Some sites that typically have poor on-page optimisation:
- Websites that have dynamically created pages – these are usually e-commerce sites and sites driven by Content Management systems. The pages themselves are only created upon a request from a browser to display the web content , which is being stored in a database. Many eCommerce sites provide page results as a result of a browser completing a category search, or a price range search. in this instance these pages are created on the fly. So there is no static content to be crawled and indexed by a search engine. There are a number of ways around this problem.
- Older Static sites that cannot be updated easily – many older HTML based websites still abound and although static web pages are ideal for search engines to crawl and index, these same web pages are often difficult to update without the assistance of a web developer. The internet is dynamic and you need to be able to update the keywords on your web pages and change the content from time to time – tweaking the page to improve its ability to rank for specific keywords. Doing this too frequently with an old site will be expensive if you need to access a web developer specifically for this task.
Link Building
Why is it so important to have a lot of quality links pointing at your site? The reason it is so important to build links to your main website is because links are the objects that search engines use to determine how important and relevant you website is. The more links you have and the better the quality of those links, then the search engine will rank your pages higher in the Search results.
Ergo, the key to lifting your website’s position in the Search Engine Page rankings (Serp’s) is to employ a strategy that over time will build one way links from websites that are in a similar niche or industry to you, back to your own website.
To explain further – if there are two websites that operate in the same niche market and both have done their on page optimisation correctly then the main differentiators that the Search engines will use to determine which site to award a higher page ranking, comes down to the number of links pointing at that website, and in particular the individual pages within that website.
This last point is quite critical – links to individual pages within a website are really important. So any link building strategy you undertake should include one that includes building links to the internal pages within your website. In a competitive market strong internal pages can beat the pages of more powerful websites – we have proven this time and time again with our clients sites
